A term often heard when talking about carp reels: the big pit reel. A big pit reel is actually nothing more than a large reel with a large, spacious spool. It goes without saying that you can put a lot of line on it. The big pit reel is therefore intended for fishing carp, usually at long distances. With the enormous line capacity of a big pit reel, you can fish in places where you normally wouldn't have a chance. Of course, it is important to put the welfare of the fish first. When fishing for carp at long distances, you need to do this safely and not give the fish a chance to get stuck. A big pit reel is very suitable for casting – the line output of such a large spool is ideal for making long casts. Of course, you can also cast the lines well with a bait boat.
Shimano is one of the brands that is very strong when it comes to big pit reels. The Japanese brand has a wide range of large reels that are very suitable for carp fishing, but the big pit reel can also for beach fishing too. The range of big pit reels is wide, because brands like Daiwa, NGT, Spro and Fox have several models in their collections in all price ranges.
Big pit reels come in two different designs. There are models that are equipped with a freewheel function. However, most big pit reels are equipped with a quick drag system that allows you to adjust the drag from fully open to fully closed in one simple movement. This system allows you to fish in the same way as with a freewheel. Thus, the same reel can be used by an angler fishing for carp as by an angler hanging it under his beach rod.
