Zig fishing is a technique where you don’t present the bait on the bottom, but let it float somewhere in the water column. Using a special zig rig, you determine the length of the leader yourself, which can vary from half a meter to sometimes three meters. The bait, often a brightly colored pop-up or foam, floats precisely at the height where the carp is feeding. This makes zig fishing especially effective on warm days, when carp hang higher in the water and are less inclined to feed from the bottom.
A 12ft rod with a test curve of 2.75 to 3lb is ideal for casting long rigs in a controlled manner while still providing sufficient damping during the fight. Combine this with a reliable big pit or baitrunner reel (6000–14,000 size) with a smooth drag, so you maintain control during long runs.
Zig fishing is all about presenting bait naturally in the correct water layer. The base usually consists of an inline lead or a lead clip of 60 to 100 grams, combined with a special zig link as a leader. This supple, thin line is almost invisible and moves naturally in the water (0.28mm to 0.30mm). The rig length can vary from half a meter to as much as three meters, depending on the depth at which the carp is feeding. At the end, you attach a small, sharp hook, often baited with a piece of brightly colored foam or pop-up bait that floats conspicuously and arouses the carp’s curiosity. Because it’s difficult to cast such a long rig neatly, the zig rig is often combined with a waggler or a special zig float. This allows you to better control the rig during casting and present the bait at precisely the right depth. If you choose an adjustable zig with float, you can even adjust the length of the rig while fishing, so you don’t have to recast every time.
Zig fishing always starts with careful observation: first, see which layer of water the carp is in and adjust your RIG length accordingly. In warm weather, you often see fish just below the surface, while in cooler or changeable weather, they hang more halfway down the water layer. Start with a rig that reaches this layer of water and vary it until you get bites. With an adjustable zig, you can even adjust the depth while fishing without recasting, allowing you to quickly respond to the fish’s behavior. Regularly feeding small amounts of floating bait or micro pellets helps keep the carp active around your rig and builds confidence. Brightly colored foam hookbait with zig liquid attracts extra attention and can provide that trigger effect. Once you have the right depth and an active feeding area, zig fishing can be extremely productive.
