A really indispensable part of your angling equipment is the fishing line itself. You can fish without a float, or without a lead, but without a line is not an option. This makes it all the more important that you choose the right kind of line for your fishing. When it comes to fishing lines, the choice is enormous. The standard line that is most commonly used is a nylon line. This line is perfectly suitable for almost all disciplines, from fishing with a fixed rod to fishing with a sea fishing rod at the coast. However, in addition to this nylon line, there are other types of line that each have their own characteristics. The two best known variants are braided line, and fluorocarbon.
When fishing, you almost always tie knots in your line. Just think of attaching a trace or leader, tying on your hook, attaching a side-line and so on. What is important to know is that the knot is always the weakest part of your assembly. Therefore, always try to have as few knots as possible in your rig, to prevent the line from breaking at that point. A good knot weakens the line less than a badly tied one. We therefore recommend that you practice tying knots at home, so that you can master the knot properly when you have to tie it in less favourable conditions on the bank.
Fishing line is available in roughly three varieties. Everyone is familiar with the nylon lines and the fluorocarbon lines are very similar. The advantage of a fluorocarbon line compared to a nylon line is the invisibility and the abrasion resistance. This makes the line more suitable for drop shot fishing for perch or bottom fishing where the line should not stand out and should not rub easily. Braided line is in a different league. Unlike nylon and fluorocarbon, braided line does not have any stretch to it. Every nudge on the other side of the line is therefore immediately passed straight on to the angler. Braided line is also a lot stronger than nylon and fluorocarbon, allowing you to use a thinner line but still have enough power left over. A disadvantage of braided line is that it is a lot more visible to fish than nylon and fluorocarbon.
