A small fish is easy to lift out of the water with a fishing rod, but to land a bigger fish you need a landing net. A landing net is specially made for this purpose and makes sure that even the biggest catches are brought to shore easily. A landing net should always have a handle so that you can easily slide the net towards the water surface. There are all kinds of handles available, from very short ones, about half a metre long, to handles as long as six metres. Do you fish on a high quay or pier and is a shaft not enough? Then you can opt for a 'drop net'. Using a rope, you lower the net into the water and once the fish is in the net, you lift the net and the fish on the rope back up towards your unhooking mat.
The largest landing nets are for carp. Carp can reach really big sizes and a real top fish can weigh over 20 kilograms (40lbs). A carp net is therefore spacious. A 42" net is often used, with arms of around 107cm long. A 50" landing net is even bigger and is used when you can expect really big carp. The stem of a carp net is often not included in the delivery and needs to be ordered separately. The threads of both handle and net are universal, so you can choose a handle and net yourself and they don't have to be the same brand. A good carp net is strong and spacious and is also made of soft material, so it does not damage the mucus layer and scales of the fish. Often a carp net fits perfectly into a holdall, so you can transport the net and your rods to the bank in one go.
A different kind of net is used when fishing for pike, zander, and perch. These fish often do not reach the size that a fish like a carp or a catfish can. So, you can start with a slightly smaller net. The material of a predatory fish net is soft, of course, but it is also often equipped with a rubber coating. This prevents the treble hooks from snagging easily on the net and makes the net smell less. A predator net is often collapsible, so you can easily take it with you, for example by attaching it to your backpack, when you are out fishing.
