Fishing with the Carolina rig

Also known as a C-rig, it has become very popular in recent years with perch anglers. With this rig you can fish slowly, sometimes up to 5 minutes per cast. This is ideal during the colder months, when the fish are less active, or on days when the fish simply aren’t biting.

Rod and reel for carolina rig

For fishing with a Carolina rig, a spinning rod with a weight of 3 to 18 g and a length of 2.10 to 2.70 m is perfect. A sensitive tip is essential for feeling the bites and to feel the structure of the seabed well. Choose a lightweight spinning reel size 2000-3000.

Carolina rig mounting

You need different materials for the carolina rig. To start, use braided main line with a thickness of 0.08-0.10 for better bottom sensitivity. The pre-string must be made of fluorocarbon with a thickness of 0.30-0.40 mm, depending on the obstacles in the water. On this front a so-called “bullet weight” with a sound bead is mounted. The rig, nylon or fluorocarbon, should have a thickness of 0.20-0.28 mm. Finally, use an offset hook suited to the size of your bait. For small baits (7-10 cm) an offset hook size 1-2 is recommended and for larger baits a hook size 1/0 or 2/0. For carolina rig fishing you can use different types of shad. The most used shad are imitations of lobsters, shrimps and worms.

How to fish with the carolina rig?

It is very important to use the right rhythm when fishing with the carolina rig. Many beginners fish too fast. When using a carolina rig, patience is very important. Let the rig sink slowly to the bottom and take your time retrieving the bait, with an occasional pause. This way you can simulate the bait being a lobster moving between rocks or plants. And if you fish slowly, you can also notice better if there are special spots on the bottom, such as mussel beds and stones. These are exactly the places where predatory fish hang out.
